Brookfield Zoo - Julia's class trips (photos)

Julia is a kangaroo joey!

Sandra, Julia and Kayla - 1st grade field trip to Brookfield Zoo!

Kayla, Julia & Sandra watch the polar bears

Hands-on "lessons" taught the girls about bears. Here, Julia asks questions about a life size (and real!) brown bear skull.

Outside Wolf Woods, Julia posed next to a bronze statue of a wolf.

Julia asked me if I could be one of the chaperones for her class field trips this month. Since Mama was able to watch Stevie for the afternoon, I got to go with Julia and her schoolmates to Brookfield Zoo. The weather was perfect for walking around the zoo - the day started out around 60 degrees, cloudy and breezy. Since we split up into small groups, I had Julia and two friends, Sandra and Kayla. Our group walked around the East side of the zoo, visiting the lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!), and also seals, dolphins, and sea lions. We even got to watch the newborn polar bear cub for awhile. We zoomed across the zoo to meet up with the others for lunch. After lunch, we explored the West side of the zoo, starting with Wolf Woods. We spent a lot of time seeing the animals of the African Forest, and the animals of the African Savannah, including the baby giraffe. Along the walk out, we saw camels, bison, bats, elephants and hippos. We saw over 80% of the zoo's animals - we missed out on the gorillas (and primate house), crocodiles and other swamp-dwelling animals. And the only reason we missed out on them was because there just wasn't enough time for us to visit them all. If the girls had their choice, we would have eaten our lunches while we saw those animals we didn't have time for!

Julia and I are very excited because this summer, Brookfield Zoo will be hosting StingRay Bay, where you'll actually be able to pet the stingrays in their pool. Mama (Babcia) gave me a wonderful Mother's Day gift that I picked up today - a year-long membership to the zoo. I know we'll have lots of fun visiting over the summer, when both the StingRay Bay and the Butterfly House are open! Thank you, Mama and Babcia, for a wondeful gift! And since we can bring a guest with us each visit, you're welcome to join us every time we go! We have to bring Koy and Ela and Stevie with us (Julia and me) so we can all see the dolphin show - which is always fun.

Hope everyone else has a wonderful visit when they go to the zoo - it's always a lot of fun for us... especially on "Zoo Year's Eve" Dec. 31st. If you haven't been in a while, take the wee ones to the Hamill Family Play Center for a lot of great photo opps!

Take care and have fun!
